Diagnosis and Planning
The first step towards any major medical or dental treatment is to consult with a doctor. If you’re considering dental implants here in San Mateo, schedule a consultation with Drs. Jeff and Diana Powers for a diagnosis. During this consultation, they will determine the state of your oral health, jawbone density, how many implants you need and more.
Once it has been decided that dental implants are best for your situation, Drs. Jeff and Diana Powers will take scans of your smile, then collaborate with a local oral surgeon to plan your implant placement.
Supplemental Treatments and Surgical Placement
In some cases, a patient’s jawbone may not have enough volume to fit a dental implant right away. Should this occur, a bone graft may be recommended, which increases the density of an area of jawbone to create a better foundation for the implant itself. In most cases, the implant fixture can be placed within the same surgery as the bone graft. These two steps are referred to a local oral surgeon that we collaborate with to ensure that the placement goes smoothly.
After implant fixture placement, expect a long healing period. During this sensitive time, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- DO NOT USE A STRAW. The vacuum, sucking motion could dislodge blood clots that are essential to the healing process.
- Stick to a Soft Diet. Avoid hard foods while healing. Instead choose softer ones such as yogurt, soups, and oatmeal.
- Take Pain Medication as Prescribed. It’s normal to experience some pain and soreness after implant surgery. If you have been prescribed any medication, take them as instructed by Drs. Jeff and Diana Powers.
After implant placement, it may take from a few weeks to a few months for the surgical site to heal completely. Once healed, Drs. Jeff and Diana Powers will place the crown restoration on top. This crown is customized based on scans of your smile for ideal appearance and fit. We’ll check for comfort, and color the crown to the correct shade of white that matches your natural teeth.
