Digital X-Rays for Treatment with Dr. Powers
When you think of x-rays in a dental office, images of heavy lead aprons and 2D x-ray machines probably come to mind. But times have changed, and here in San Mateo we have invested in advanced technology that essentially replaces traditional x-rays. This new technology, known as Planmeca, provides more accurate images of a patient’s teeth, jaw, and more, giving Drs. T. Jeff and Diana Powers the flexibility of meticulous treatment planning.
What’s the Difference with Digital X-Rays?
Digital x-rays are taken nearly the same way as a 2D x-rays, except the results are saved as a digital image, instead of printed out and analyzed on x-ray film. With digitally produces x-rays, images can be magnified and even turned into panoramic 2D models of your smile.
For example, the treatment plan for a dental implant placement with 2D x-ray film may require more preparation time in order to produce an accurate placement. However, by taking advantage of a panoramic or digital x-ray, dentists have a larger view of teeth placement, expediting the placement process.
Intraoral Cameras: What Are They?
Mounted on a wand, the intraoral camera is a handheld camera that takes individual images of the inside of your mouth to construct a close-up model of your smile. With these detailed images, your dentist can keep track of any warning signs of disease, grinding, and the general condition of your teeth.
The Planmeca Imaging System is a far cry from the days of heavy lead aprons and lying back in chairs. Instead, the system utilizes a standing machine where the the scanner moves around a patient’s head.
The Planmeca machine is convenient and harmless for patients and operators alike. In less than 15 minutes, Drs. T. Jeff and Diana Powers have a full panoramic model of your smile to work with. They can also display this model on a monitor to show how the treatment will play out, whether in stages or all at once.
We encourage our patients to interact with our doctors, whether it’s discussing questions about their treatment, their Planmeca scans, and more. Patient education is also important to us, as we believe that an informed patient is a more confident patient.
