What Is Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontics is the dental field associated with diagnosing, preventing and resolving problems with the alignment of the teeth and jaws. For those with crooked, gapped or misaligned teeth, an orthodontist can recommend and offer a specific plan for treatment to help fix their smile.
Why Pursue Treatment for Crooked Teeth?
Orthodontic treatment is not, as some might think, an exercise in vanity, as there are many health benefits associated with straightening one’s teeth. Misaligned or crooked teeth can push other teeth out of place, cause premature wear and even hinder one’s ability to eat, talk and breathe. Straightening your teeth has the added benefit of a more aesthetic smile>, but the benefits go far beyond just the cosmetic.
How Can the Invisalign System Realign Your Teeth?
From impressions of your teeth, detailed imaging and diagnostics and advanced computer simulations, a series of gradually changing clear plastic aligners will be created to shift your teeth from their current state to their ideal alignment over a period of several months. Patients should wear each aligner for the required period of time before transitioning to the next set. The patient’s smile will be noticeably straighter by the end of the process.
What is the Recommended Age for Your Child to Use Invisalign?
Many types of orthodontic treatment can happen at any age, however, it’s generally best for kids to wait until the age of seven before considering Invisalign. At this age, it’s a usually good plan to consult with our dentists about any form of orthodontics, as a child’s still-developing mouth is easier to guide into the correct alignment.
Are Invisalign Clear Aligners Always Better Than Traditional Braces?
Not in every case. For some patients, there is more benefit to be had from traditional metal braces. The Invisalign system is well-suited to helping align the teeth that are visible when you smile. However, if there is extensive straightening to be done, metal braces might offer better results. Make sure to consult with our dentists about your goals to help our team develop the right treatment plan for you.
