What Are Dental Implants? – San Mateo, CA
Missing teeth are a still prevalent health problem for many. In fact, statistics show that the average adult has three or more decayed or missing teeth. Fortunately, there are many treatments available to patients with one or more missing teeth. Of these, we believe that dental implants can provide the best results.
We receive many San Mateo area restoration patients who are not fully aware of implants and the many benefits that come with this revolutionary treatment. For this reason, we recommend that you continue reading this page to learn more about this treatment and all that it offers.
The Structure of a Dental Implant
The most common form of dental implant in use today is made up of three pieces:
- Implant Fixture
The first of these pieces, the implant fixture, is a small metal tooth root made from titanium. During the implant surgery, this piece is placed in the empty spot in your jaw left behind by the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals following this procedure, a process called osseointegration takes place, which works to fuse implant and bone tissue together. The success of this process allows your jawbone to manipulate the piece as if it were a natural tooth root.
The next piece is the abutment, which serves to connect the restoration to the implant fixture. Also typically made from titanium, the abutment is attached to the implant fixture once it has finished healing. In some cases, our San Mateo patients may have this piece attached directly after the placement surgery.
The final piece of the implant is the restoration that finishes it. This piece varies by how many teeth you are having replaced and the location of those teeth. That said, the most common type of restoration used with implants is the porcelain crown. Implant bridges and overdentures are other popular options.
Regardless of the type of restoration you choose, rest assured that Dr. T. Jeff Powers and Dr. Diana C. Powers will custom make your restoration based on your unique case. By looking at scans and impressions of your natural teeth, restorations that perfectly match the look and shape of your remaining natural teeth can be provided.
Benefits of the Implant Process
Thanks to the fusion process of osseointegration, dental implants come with many unique benefits, such as:
- Greater ability to eat and speak. With some restoration techniques, it can be difficult to chew and speak properly. You may have to give up some of your favorite foods. Implants are as strong as natural teeth, and fully capable of handling all of your favorite foods.
- Reduced jawbone deterioration. When a tooth is lost, the area of the jawbone that tooth sat in no longer gets the exercise it needs to maintain its strength. While other restoration techniques are unable to stop this deterioration, dental implants can as they are embedded in the jawbone like natural teeth.
- Implants provide long-term value. Unlike other restoration methods, dental implants can last for many years, even reaching decades when properly cared for.
- A Treatment that won’t slip or slide out of place. Once your implants are in place, they will not move or shift out of place as your jawbone will work to keep them in position.
